Astanga Yoga at The Hill That Breathes

With a background of dance and movement I have an excellent understanding of anatomy and alignment. This also gives a dance-inspired flow to the asana, creating a dynamic class structure (with music playing an integral part too).

Add to that some down-to-earth spiritual teachings and a sprinkling of humour, and you have my Jivamukti classes

Emma

All our yoga holidays are designed for all levels. As on other weeks, there is one session in the morning and one late-afternoon.

We're delighted to welcome one of the founder teachers of the renowned Jivamukti Centre in London to The Hill's programme this year.

Jivamukti is a fascinating form of yoga. It is one of the nine internationally recognised styles of Hatha yoga. It means 'liberation whilst living' and was famously developed by David Life and Sharon Gannon as a means to return to the roots of real yoga: so it combines vigorous physical asanas with spiritual teachings, with the aim of helping students find freedom in their daily lives.

The classes thus include Vinyasa (flowing asana sequences), hands-on adjustments, Pranayama (breathing exercises), meditation, Sanskrit chanting and deep relaxation.

Emma Henry was a professional dancer who came to yoga to complement her classical and contemporary dancing. But the yoga took over: she studied with legends Sri K. Pattabhi Jois and Sharath Rangaswami in Mysore and with Jivamukti founders themselves, Sharon Gannon and David Life.

She teaches at the New York and Berlin, as well as London, Jivamukti centres.
